Traditional Hammam in the Marrakech Medina

A centuries-old Moroccan purification ritual.

Traditional Hammam in the Marrakech Medina

Step into a working neighbourhood hammam — not a tourist spa — where Marrakchis have gathered for generations. The hammam ritual is one of the oldest beauty traditions of the Maghreb, blending hot steam, savon noir (black soap), kessa scrubbing and argan oil massage into a deeply restorative experience.

We book the hammam directly with a trusted partner in the Medina. You leave the riad on foot, walk a few minutes through the alleys, and step into a vaulted, candle-warm room where time slows. The session begins with steam to open the pores. Black soap — a thick, fragrant paste of olive and eucalyptus — is applied generously. After a few minutes, the kessa glove exfoliates every centimetre of skin, removing layers of dust and travel fatigue. A rose-water rinse, an argan oil massage, and a glass of mint tea close the ritual. You return to the riad feeling reborn, soft, light. Available for couples, solo travellers, and small groups. Female and male practitioners on request.
