Arset Ihiri – Dar el Bacha: the Riad Darino neighbourhood, 12–15 minutes from Jemaa el-Fna
Riad Darino sits in Arset Ihiri, in Derb Boumba — a residential quarter of the Marrakech Medina about 1.2 km north-north-west of Jemaa el-Fna square. On foot: 12 to 15 minutes to the square, 5 minutes to Dar el Bacha and to the Bab Doukkala gate. It is the right balance for a medina stay: everything is walkable, and you sleep in silence.
Where exactly
A derb is a private alley, often a dead end, serving a handful of houses. Ours is mostly home to Marrakchi families. No tourist flow, no scooters: once you cross the door, the city goes quiet. The riad itself is over 200 years old; its thick original walls do the rest.
On foot from the riad
- ◆Dar el Bacha and Bab Doukkala: about 5 minutes
- ◆The souks (Semmarine, Mouassine): 10 to 12 minutes
- ◆Ben Youssef Madrasa: about 12 minutes
- ◆Jemaa el-Fna square: 12 to 15 minutes
- ◆Koutoubia Mosque: about 15 minutes
- ◆Bahia Palace: about 25 minutes
These are the times of a relaxed walker in the alleys. On arrival the team shows you the way, and a hand-drawn map is provided in each room.
Getting here
From Marrakech-Menara airport, allow 15 to 20 minutes by car. A car cannot reach the riad door — the alleys are pedestrian: the driver drops you at the nearest vehicle point, Bab Doukkala, and a member of the team walks the last few minutes with you and your luggage. If you book direct, you can add a private transfer to your reservation (€20 one-way, €35 round-trip); from 3 nights, the round-trip is offered.
From Jemaa el-Fna on foot: head north through the souks towards Mouassine, then Dar el Bacha. Allow 12 to 15 minutes.
Why this neighbourhood rather than the square
Riads a few hundred metres from Jemaa el-Fna are noisy at night and crowded in the morning. Arset Ihiri offers the opposite: a quarter of an hour on foot, and the calm of a quarter where people actually live. It is what our guests mention most often in their reviews — after breakfast.
